In last night’s game, the Red Sox were down 4-2 going into
the ninth inning. The Rangers brought in closer Frank Francisco. Coming into the
game with an ERA of 2.01, he left with it at 3.66. With runners on base and two
outs, Francisco had newly acquired Victor Martinez in a 2-2 count. Martinez
doubled, tying the game. Boston would go on to score two more runs, winning 8-4.
They extended their lead over the Rangers in the Wild Card
to 1.5 games.
Texas had this game in their hands. And blew it. This is
mid-August, not mid-April. You cannot blow games like this. A two run lead
should be enough for your closer, especially with two outs. If you don’t have a
dependable closer, you cannot get into the playoffs. And it appears that this
is a sticking point with the Rangers. They will not make the playoffs.
I cannot stress enough how important this game was, how
important this entire series is. Boston is Texas’ only competition right now;
not the Angels, not the Rays. You have three games against them at home. You must win at least two of them. And when you are
literally one pitch away from securing victory, and you let it slip through
your fingers, you tell the world what you are really made of. Texas is not a
playoff team.
